As communicated by the WHO and the Nigeria Center For Disease Control (NCDC), the coronavirus (covid-19) pandemic has reached Nigeria. As at the time of writing, there are nine confirmed cased cases in Akwa Ibom (non yet in Cross River State).  In the meantime, the country is in the second week of lockdown. This has resulted in acute hardship for people (and their dependent families) that used to survive on daily income from doing menial tasks, from their shops etc. In some parts of Nigeria, unrests arising from physical and financial difficulty in accessing food by this segment of the population are a growing cause of concern.  In Akwa Ibom State, the government has set up a committee to address the impacts of the covid-19 pandemic in the state. However, overall contributions (also from NGOs and companies) to the emergency food sector are struggling to cope amidst a fall in donations, insufficient supplies from foodshops and a lack of volunteers.

In support of the current ongong efforts in Akwa Ibom State, Akcross Union Netherlands, is making her contribution to a foodbank towards helping citizens that are caught up in the crisis as a consequence of measures taken to curb the spread of the coronavirus.
